VItamin B12 is essential to keep your body’s blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA. VItamin B12 supports bone health, red blood cell formation, energy levels, and mood. Vitamin B12 helps prevent megaloblastic anaemia.

It is found naturally in animal products. This is often why vegans and vegetarians can be deficient in B12. Some medications can also affect the absorption of Vitamin B12 like Omeprazole. Other digestive disorders such as Coeliacs and Crohns, other those who have had gastric surgery can impair the absorption of Vitamin B12. Alcoholics are also known to be deficient.

Patients over the age of 65 have a reduction in stomach acid and so more prone to Vitamin B12 deficiency.

It is not essential to have a blood test before B12 injections, however, if you have a number of symptoms or any concerns, it is worth seeking medical help and blood tests before.

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin, so it is impossible to have too much as any excess vitamin is excreted.

An improvement in symptoms can be felt after a week, although some patients notice benefits after a few days. If you don’t feel any benefits after 2-3 injections, it is likely that you are not deficient.


Recommended dose (1ml/mg) is a weekly injection for 6 weeks, followed by maintenance every 4-6 weeks.
